Are you ready to make a commitment? To weight loss that is.

When you make a commitment in marriage you vow to stay together during the good times and bad times. What if everyone ended their marriage at the first sign of a challenge, we would have a 100% divorce rate. Let’s face it, there will always be challenges. The same holds true when trying to lose weight. All days are not going to be easy. There will be temptations and there will be tough days.
So the question is, are you ready? I mean really ready, to make a commitment to change your life permanently? If you are reading this right now, chances are that you are ready!

Everything starts with a decision. To make any changes in your life, you must first make a committed decision. What do I mean by a committed decision? A decision is a decision — or is it?

Committed decisions show up in two places – your calendar and your checkbook. No matter what you say you value, or what you feel your priorities are, you can truly see what matters to you by where you spend your time and your money.

Once you make a commitment to lose weight and throw yourself into it, you will greatly increase your chances of success. This doesn’t mean there won’t be any obstacles along the way, but it means if you are truly committed you will find ways around them. It’s important that you make a committed decision with absolute certainty. There is never a right time, if you want to improve your appearance, your health or your self-esteem, the time is now.

If you are ready to make a committed decision start by following these four steps:

Write down your goal: Write down your weight loss goal, your start date and even include the date by which you would like to achieve your goal (be realistic).
   
Create your action plan: Determine the specific actions you are going you will take to reach your goal (be specific).

Share it with everyone: Don’t keep your goal to yourself. You need support, share it with your family, friends and co-workers. The more people you share it with the more committed you will become.

Keep a journal: By writing down everything that you are doing to lose weight (food, water, activity) you are more likely to succeed. It has been proven that those who record everything they consume in a food journal lose twice as much weight as those who don’t. A journal will also keep you focused on your goal.

As a weight loss master coach I help people to begin to make healthier choices that will move them in the direction of their ideal weight. Using these strategies I’m sharing with you has helped me to lose 30 pounds and my clients over to lose thousands of pounds.

 

Have Yourself a Healthy Summer

Summer is finally here! Today is officially the first day of summer. Some of us wait for this time of the year all winter long, when the sun is shining and we no longer have to bundle up in layers of clothing.

It’s the time of year when we seem to socialize more often with family and friends and enjoy lots of weekend barbeques. During this time of year when we are more social, it’s important to plan ahead so you can stay on track with your weight loss and fitness goals. And you can still have a good time while you are doing it. Begin by incorporating a healthy diet and fun activities into your weekend get-togethers. This is the time of year when fresh fruits and vegetables are in abundance; take advantage of the freshness and the lower prices of produce. Here are tips you can incorporate to ensure you enjoy a healthy summer for you and your family.

Plan Ahead – I love this time of year when we get to fire up the barbeque (less dishes). Avoid hot dogs and hamburgers and instead choose one of the many healthier options. There are many great healthy options to choose from like; chicken breasts, salmon, chicken, beef or prawn kabobs, or even extra lean ground bison in a homemade burger (my favorite). When you are invited to someone else’s barbeque, plan ahead and prepare to bring your own delicious healthy dishes and avoid filling up on high-fat/calorie foods. Load up on lots of fresh fruits and veggies. Pack lots of fresh vegetables like sliced bell peppers, carrots, cucumbers, celery, broccoli and cherry tomatoes to dip in your favorite low-fat dressing or hummus. When you plan ahead it’s easy to enjoy healthy summer meals while still enjoying time with your family and friends and avoiding weight gain when your goal is weight loss.

Get Active – When the sun is shining think of it as an excuse to get more active and get outside for some vitamin D. You can have fun getting active; grab your children, nieces or nephews and head to the park to play some Frisbee. Or head to the beach and play some beach volleyball. Keep your running shoes in the car so you are always prepared to get active when the opportunity is there. At lunch go for a short walk to get some fresh air and re-energize yourself for the rest of the day. And after dinner get the whole family out for a walk or a bike ride, it’s a great chance to talk about your day and see what’s going on with the ones you love. Plan physical activity just like you would any other important appointment and keep a journal of your success this summer by recording everything you consume as well as all of your physical activity.

Planning is very important to your success. Fail to plan, plan to fail. Getting into shape and losing weight won’t happen by accident, with some planning you will ensure your success. Take advantage of all of the healthy things summer has to offer!

Fast Food: Quick and Tasty…Is it actually bad for you?

Whether fast food is bad for you depends on your choice. Are you going for a bacon double cheeseburger, French fries, and soda, or are you picking up a grilled chicken pita, salad, and V8? Just like when choosing your groceries, ask yourself, is this a whole food, or close to a whole food? A sandwich with protein and veggies on whole grain bread can be just as fast as chicken fingers, with a lot more nutritional value and a lot less grease. Stay away from fried, processed options and stick to fresh, whole foods. Most fast food chains are now offering healthier options like salads, soups, subs, sandwiches, and baked potatoes, so the choice to go healthy and still fast is now yours. Be mindful, though, that you can make even a salad into a weapon against your body. A Southwest Taco Salad from Wendy’s has about the same fat, calories, and sodium as a Wendy’s Double Classic with Cheese. Yikes. 

Whatever you decide, take a moment to sit down and enjoy your choice. I don’t mean dashboard dining…sitting in the car while you’re driving. When you stop to enjoy your food, your body can digest it properly, and this will help avoid heartburn and indigestion that can be caused by eating on the go.

 

How to vacation without gaining weight!

Okay stop laughing! I believe it is possible to go on vacation and not gain weight! The key words in that sentence being “I believe”! With summer time upon us many are planning their summer get-away, but before you do there are some things you need to know if you don’t want to gain weight during your vacation!


You see, your beliefs, control every move you make. So if you don’t believe you can change your beliefs or your mindset about having a wonderful vacation without focusing on food, you’ll never know that you can.

It’s so important to uncover the beliefs that you have about vacationing and food. In order to do this, you need to take your mind off of autopilot, and examine your current beliefs, philosophies and habits about vacationing and food… before setting out on your adventure!

When you’re getting ready for your vacation, do you begin to think about all the food that you’re going to eat? Do you make deals with yourself like; “I’ll diet now so I can eat what I want and diet again when I get back!” Maybe you say; “I’m going on vacation and I’m not going to deprive myself of food, I’ve worked hard and I deserve to eat as much as I want!” I do believe we are all too familiar with the result that kind of thinking creates!

You don’t want to feel deprived, nor do you need to deprive yourself especially when you’re on vacation. What you need to do is change your focus from what you should and shouldn’t eat, to what you should or shouldn’t THINK!

Here are few ideas to help you in shifting your mindset:

Old Belief: I always gain weight on vacation usually around 10 lbs.

New Belief: I’m going to enjoy eating and drinking and come home feeling great not overweight!

Old Belief: I’m on vacation so I’m going to eat as much as I want.

New Belief: I’m vacationing so I’m going to eat a variety of foods until I feel content.

Old Belief: I don’t exercise on vacation; I relax and take it easy.

New Belief: I’m on vacation… I can swim, walk on the beach, dance every night, and go for a hike or horseback riding!

Old Belief:
Vacationing is my time to indulge; the sky’s the limit.

New Belief: While on vacation I’m going to enjoy some new foods and fun activities.

Here is a great habit that you can start to implement now before you go on vacation. At least 80% of the time, eat healthy, whole foods, and then 20% of the time you can allow yourself to eat foods that you really enjoy, so that you don’t feel deprived, or restricted. Begin this today and begin to change old beliefs and habits and create a new mindset that will serve you well on your vacation and throughout your lifetime.

Enjoy your vacation knowing that you can eat what you want, and return home feeling refreshed, revived and ready to live your best life!

 

Has Oprah finally figured it out?

Recently I caught an episode of Oprah, I think it may have been a rerun. In her show she had a woman who was a PhD in nutrition but was having trouble losing weight. Many would wonder, how could that be? She’s got all the education to know what she needs to do, why isn’t she doing it.

This is what I talk about in my book and program, we all know what we need to do to lose weight, the problem is we’re not doing it.

A very interested conversation followed about self-image and how it relates to our weight. One thing that was brought up, is something I tell all my coaching clients and that is you need to envision yourself as you’d like to be. Oprah talked about visualization and goal setting, both of which I also talk quite a bit about.  But improving one’s self-image takes more than just that.

When I was doing my research I learned a lot from a book called Pyscho-Cybernetics by Dr. Maxwell Maltz. I learned so much reading his book and have actually incorporated a lot of his teachings into the system I developed. In his book he provides tools to help you make your goal become engrained in your self-image. This way your goals become a part of who you are, rather than something you are trying to attain, often unsuccessfully.

I am so grateful that I came across this book when doing my research for my own book and program. In his book I learned that if you don’t make your goal of your ideal weight part of your self-image, you will continue to struggle because most times your self-image won’t cooperate.

If you see yourself as over weight and think that losing weight is too hard, your self-image will sabotage you at every turn. Thanks to Dr. Maltz I was able to learn this and it has been such a great tool for me in helping myself with my own weight loss struggles and for me to help the many clients that I work with.

Our self-image was influenced greatly by our parents, teachers, society and all of the experiences that shaped our lives while growing up.

As an adult you are now the creator of your own life and you can shape your life and your body to be exactly the way you want it.

Find your motivation to lose weight!

So why do you want to lose weight?  What are the reasons that motivate you to go on a diet? Is there a class reunion coming up or are you doing it for your partner?  Reasons can motivate you for a while, but they won’t sustain you for a lifetime. 



During a 16-week study done by the University of Kentucky and the University of North Carolina, they found that people who were able to drop at least 5% of their weight and maintain that loss, identify personal reasons for wanting to lose weight. 



Some wanted to be physically active to play with their children or grandchildren, others simply wanted to live life to the fullest by eating healthy and maintaining a positive mindset.



Those that didn’t make the grade named external motivators for wanting to lose weight like pressure from family and friends, feeling guilty or not feeling good enough.



You may need to dig a little deeper to find your inner motivation. Here are three things you can do, to get started.



1. Write down your goals and review them once a month. Before you do anything, take the time to write down the goals that you are committed to make and review them each month. Research has found that people who remain focused and motivated past weeks four and eight, which is when motivation tends to wane, benefit from taking the time to set goals and review them often. Doing this helps them to remain motivated and focused on the end result.



2. Keep a journal.  A great way to see your achievements, big or small is by keeping a daily journal of your successes.  A success can be that you’ve managed to drink 6 glasses of water that day or you walked for an extra 15 minutes.  Keeping track of what you’ve eaten and portion sizes is also important. Studies have shown that people who keep a food journal lose twice as much weight as those that don’t!



3. Celebrate your life!  If you find that you can almost fit into your skinny jeans or that you have much more energy than you’ve had in months, take a picture of yourself doing your happy dance and put it on the fridge. Write a weight loss affirmation that resonates with you and put it in your car, in your office and on your bathroom mirror.  Read inspirational and motivational quotes and books that keep will keep you in a positive mindset. Celebrate your life everyday in some way.  Begin writing a gratitude list of even the smallest things your grateful for.  Find ways to nurture yourself. List one thing daily that you like about yourself, and stop finding your faults and appreciate the good things about yourself!



Incorporate all of these suggestions, as they work! It’s important to come up with several reasons why losing weight is important to you, so that you can be reminded of them when you’re having a difficult day. Setting mini-goals along the way is very helpful too, especially if you want to lose a lot of weight. And don’t forget to reward yourself (without food of course) for all of your accomplishments along the way.
